Computer Screen Flashes When Playing Games

04/24/2012 5:52 PM

I am running Avast as anti-Virus, also Zonealrm, and Advance system care but turned off Advance System care. I am running XP.

Can any one help me figure out whst causes the screen to flash during game play. It just flickers every few seconds and a time or two it kicked me out of the game to desk top.

Was it working at some time in the past? Have you upgraded the game recently? or has it auto upgraded? What card are you running? What game and version are you playing? You may be exceeding the limits of your video card...

Every thing worked fine until just a two or three months ago. My Son was playing WOW and mentioned it was flashing, That the only game it did it on untill rescently. Now it does it on all games I play. I went in and got a up date for the Graphics card but it didn't help. My graphic card is Plug & play Monotor Intel (R) 82865G Graphic Control. We played WOW, Around the World in 80 days, Zuma, etc. It flashes only during the actual game play.

Are these on-line games or on your hard drive or CD/DVD? If you are playing on-line you may be exceeding bandwidth available either do to availability from provider or do to programs running on your computer, possibly in the background...

If it's starting to flicker, I would bet money that it's the video card. Even with low bandwidth, a game like WoW will just experience latency issues, which won't cause flickering but instead would cause a low 'frames per second' count.

Eventually, your poor video card is going to give out and you'll notice a shift in the screen and it'll freeze graphically. If you're using a desktop, it might be time to get a replacement card. You might not notice it with smaller games because they aren't as strenuous on your video card, but eventually you will, and it is only going to get worse

Could be the monitor as well, I've had one that failed but started flashing first. Easiest way to decide is to borrow another monitor to see if the problem persists.

My guess is you have a conflict with your device drivers. Make sure all your drivers are up to date for your computer, this includes your video card, sound card, motherboard, and network card or chip. WOW is an online game, so check and see if youo have the same problem with a game installed on your computer, just to eliminate any network problems. Then disable your sound card in control panel, or remove it to see of there is a conflict there. If it's your monitor that is giving you the problem, it will do it no matter what you're doing, game or no game. Video cards are very cheap on places like Ebay, so if it is your card, it shouldn't break the bank to fix it. You probably could use a better card anyway if you're playing WOW. That Intel chip sounds like a built-in graphics chip and not a separate card. If that's the case, it is sharing system memory and there may be a problem with your memory as well. Prime95, a free program found on the internet, can check your system memory for problems. That would be a good thing to do as well.

Check the Windows event viewer for video errors.

Sounds like your power supply can't handle the wattage (anymore). Maybe you just recently started powering something through a USB port? Otherwise the supply could be breaking down. Just my opinion though
