I does know that this seems to indicate that the boot medium you try to boot from is damaged somehow or the boot sector is damaged or both.

you might want to check in the bios where from the computer tries to boot and if a CD boot or more advanced a USB boot is possible when changing the sequence.

Good luck

If the boot ROM chip is in a socket, just give it a wiggle and press it firmly home, could be as simple as that.
Prob won't do it, but it won't cost and you'll feel better for having tried.

While you are in there, vacuum out all the fluff and waggle all the boards and connectors.

Well Del you are almost correct. When i made a search in google it was instructed to do "check disk r" with windows disk and in case if it doesn't do, try changing IDE cable and do some fail safe in boot which i don't remember.Fortunately recheck worked fine. Thank you Technical data wins ultimately

Try This ....

Instructions

  1. Diagnose the "Unmountable Boot Volume" Error
    • 1 Determine if you have your BIOS settings configured so as to force faster UDMA modes. In this case, you can solve the problem if you restart your computer, enter the BIOS and then load the "fail-safe" default settings. Next, reboot the computer and the problem will be fixed.
    • 2 Find out if you used the wrong IDE cables. This error can commonly be caused when you swap hard drives and use the wrong IDE cables to connect them. You may experience this error if your computer uses Ultra Direct Memory Access, or the UDMA hard-disk controller, with a standard 40-wire connector cable. In this case, you can fix the problem simply by using the correct IDE cables when using these hard-disk controllers.
    • 3 If none of these possible causes corresponds with your problem, then complete the steps in Section 2.
Resolve the "Unmountable Boot Volume" Error
    • 4 Boot up your computer from your Windows XP installation CD. Insert the XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and turn on your computer.
    • 5 Set your BIOS to boot from CD. Your system's BIOS settings can be opened by hitting the F2, F8 or Delete key on your keyboard as the computer boots up. The specific key differs depending on your computer's manufacturer. When you see the message "Press any key to boot from CD," tap any key on your keyboard and wait until you see the "Welcome to Setup" screen.
    • 6 Hit "R" to use your Recovery Console to repair the installation. If you have a dual-boot computer, you need to select the particular Windows installation you would like to access.
    • 7 Type in your administrative password when the computer prompts you. If you have no password, simply press Enter. This will bring you to the command prompt.
    • 8 Type "CHKDSK /R" and press Enter. CHKDSK will now scan and repair your hard drive. Type "Exit" when this process is complete
    • 9 Press "Enter" to restart the computer. Your computer should now boot properly, without that annoying error.

Usually that drive is a goner friend. I have yet to save any with that error and have have repaired hundreds of computers. Sometimes you can get data off it using an ide or sata to usb adapter. For some reason even drives that refuse to show on their primary internal computer interface will give up some data on external host adapters. Unlike the "click of death" errors I do not believe this error is temperature related so the chilling the drive quick fix is probably not a viable choice. Good luck.

You may want to try this to repair the boot sector of your hard drive.

If you had compressed your hard drive to save space, you may be in deep trouble. Tom's Hardware's forums may have some other answers.

You dual boot your operating system with the same partition. You installed the two operating system in one station. And check also your version in operating system. In dual booting an operating system you must installed first the lower version in drive c: and the other OS must be installed in drive d: separate other drive for your backup data.

All I know in dual booting XP and linux, win xp must be first to installed and create/prepare a partition with the logical drive d: and e: when the win xp installation is successful, restart your computer and boottrap now your linux. And the boot loader of linux will find now the partition D: as your mountable boot volume so that you can continue your installation until successfull.
