How Can I Calculate the Efficiency of My HVAC System?

05/05/2012 5:51 AM

How can i calculate the efficiency of my HVAC system (2 x 72 Tons, In each set of system we have 6 scroll compressor, and for running this HVAC we have 2 condenser pumps motor (10HP) & 2 chiller condenser pump motor (7.5HP) and one cooling tower fan motor 7.5 HP)?

Kindly give us your best guideline for the same.

Thanks in advance

Regards

The first thing I would do is define exactly what efficiency means to you, then start listing the variables that support the calculation of "energy out/energy in" where "energy" could be electrical, mechanical, thermal, etc. Your manufacturers' data sheets have some of the information that you need, plus any operating records like utility bills, actual equipment readings, etc. Make sure that you use a consistent base and that you convert all the units properly. Let us know how you finally decide how to do this and we may be able to further help you get it right.

It's how many BTU's of cooling you get per watt of electricity...On hot day when everything is fully loaded take amperage readings of all equipment, determine total wattage...Calculate cfm totals and temp drop across coils for BTU....or ballpark it by manufacturer's stated output....Divide total watts by total BTU's that equals your EER(energy efficiency rating)...typically about 7.1 for chilled water systems...

Perform energy auditing for HVAC installations as per the approved standards . It will assist you to monitor the system efficiency effectively.

I hope you have energy meters for measuring power consumption of each of the electric motors installed. For a particular set of operation add up all power consumed and divide it by actual cooling produced in Tons of refrigeration (TR). It will will give you power consumed in kW per TR which is lower the better.

Remember that for same set of equipments kW/TR will be higher for higher ambient temperature as well as lower comfort temperature.

For this I can advise you to go through simple text books on refrigeration and air conditioning.

Cooling produced is equivalent to heat removed from conditioned space. It is little voluminous calculation. Calculating 'kW/TR' only for refrigeration unit is much easier. Reversing this like 'TR/kW' in same units give COP (coefficient of performance).
