Dodge MPI Engine Flooding?

05/06/2012 9:11 AM

Does anybody know why a 1994 Dodge Van w/318 MPI fuel system would suddenly start exhibiting conditions similar to an engine with a carb on it, the condition being that it will flood for no apparent reason and the only to start it is to hold the pedal to the floor and spin motor over until it starts and burns off all the excess fuel in the cylinders, very strange. Perhaps a problem with the fuel pressure regulator? Sometimes it takes three or four minutes to clear all the excess fuel from the cylinders before the engine will start running smoothly. It's driving me nuts....thanks for any info.

I would guess that there are some injectors that are leaking fuel when the engine is turned off.

Next time the van is parked overnight, pull the plugs, and have two assistants help you watch the spark plug holes while the engine is first turned over.Look for the cylinders that are pushing a cloud of fuel out of them. BE CAREFULL. ELIMINATE ANY SPARKS FROM THE IGNITION SYSTEM. Unplug the power to the coil(s)Have a charged fire extinguisher or two at hand.

That being said, you should now know which injector, or injectors are leaking. You might try a few heavy doses of injector cleaner in it. It may clean them enough to stop the leakage. It is a cheap and effective way to go. Injectors are expensive. Good luck.

Thanks, I will try some injector cleaner. The issue only occures when I come to a stop for a minute, then go to take off again, and there is no consistancy to the problem, it might not happen for a month, then, for no reason, she floods as I go to accelerate. Anyway, thanks for the info, I'll try the injector cleaner first.
