FCC Delays Cutoff of Internet Phone Users

08/26/2005 5:00 PM

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has agreed to delay a Monday deadline for providers of Internet-based phone calls to obtain acknowledgements that their customers understand the problems they may encounter when dialing 911 in an emergency. Providers of VoIP had been told by the FCC that they should disconnect service by Tuesday to people who had not responded. Anywhere from 75,000 to 100,000 people could have been left with no service, according to industry estimates. There are about 1.7 million VoIP subscribers in the United States.

OK, we're not sure if Internet phone users know whether or not they can access 911 from their phones...So let's shut them off. then they can't call 911, the local police, their relatives or anyone else.

And let's send out EMAIL notices the day before shut-off date, because everyone knows that email is the most trusted way to get people to give up personal information.

Thank goodness someone with half a brain stepped in to move back the date.
