A good guide to cost of copper I find is the London Metal Exchange or LME :- http://www.lme.com/copper.asp

Around US$8500/tonne at the moment and also for the last 6 months - add about 20 to 50% to buy it finished as bar/rod.

You will of course also have local suppliers in Nagpur, when you have a better idea of the sizes required.

Cost is secondary to the components ability to be "fit for purpose".

It may be cheap, but will it do the job?

Only you can answer the above questions.

i didnt mean only to consider the cost.

if the sizing is known then we can reduce the cost of material reqd instead of wasting pennys on extra size busbar,...

anyway thanka maty

What did you come up with during your design review, and what exactly are you stuck on in particular?

we are approved for erection of a 132KV switchyard in maharastra.

our layout is approved by MSETCL. and we are now placing order for the required materials. we should select the length of busbar required for the required current rating.

we can select a busbar of max size but the cost goes high, hence we need to choose the busbar size in efficient way.

Current rating:- short circuit current 50KA....

thank you

You should size the busbar based on the overall design review that has (or should be if it hasn't) been done.

We (as in I) have an entire division for substation design alone, and there is a reason for that. We won't be able to help you here on CR4 because there is just too little information provided and if you under size the busbar you will likely have problems in the field, and busbar replacement is going to be far more expensive than the cost of more busbar material.

If you have quoted one thing and want to save some money by supplying something cheaper you (your company engineers or consultants hired by your company) will need to perform a proper design review and get a variation approved by your customer, this is not something we can provide given just the location and voltage.

Re: Bus Bar Sizing

How come it is a big issue for you that you got struck? Size of bus bar is decided by the kVA capacity of the substation . In designing substation the major cost considerations are for the transformer and switchgear equipment cable and bus bar is only a very minor part of the cost and have little effect on cost so the important consideration is only present capacity requirement and future expansion considerations. The cost of bus bar will depend on weather you are using copper or Aluminium bus bar . You cannot have any compromise on capacity of bus bar.

Are you designing a 132 kV substation for Maharashtra State Electric Transmission and Distribution Company? If so they have the complete designing schedule for all kV and kVA rating substations It is readily available and you do not have to break your head for such a design. If you are a subcontractor you have to get it from standard manufactures who can give you the design from their design department . There are many other local agencies who can help you if you are new to the company. This is not the right place to get an answer for your problem.

Have you tried referring to that wonderful "TNEB Power Engineers' Handbook?"

Don't you have any smart people working on this job?

Sounds like somebody forget to hire any engineers.

Not that engineers would be needed for such an elementary task. Just find a 10 year old kid with a computer and give him $5.00USD for the answer he will come up with in 30 seconds.
