Book Worms

05/14/2012 2:27 AM

I realise that the following, is perhaps, a bit off beat, but I'm hoping some one has an answer.

I have a load of books, garnered over a lifetime, and in a few of them, bookworms have established themselves. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of them...? I did hear that a week or so in the freezer would fix them up, but to no avail. Assuming that they can be got rid of, is there anything that i can put in the book cases, to prevent a re-establishment...??

I should mention that I live in a tropical region of North Queensland.

Regards,

Norm.

I would tent and fumigate the whole house....but if you want to use some of the methods mentioned in the ehow article, then just remember that these methods will kill the live bugs but, like fleas, you must make allowance for the eggs, and repeat the process weekly for several weeks,,,the freezing will kill the bugs but if you don't get them all, then reinfestation is likely to occur....so you need to get all the books that are infested at one time and treat the shelves, miss one and you have to start over....That's why I recommend the whole house fumigation....

Bookworm is a general term for insects that infest books. From several beetle larvae, moth larvae or silverfish. All are attracted for a meal. Some eat wood so will bore in. Some just eat the mold that grows on them. Others glues in the binding. The one thing they all need is moisture. So limiting that will help. Control for most is as simple as placing mothballs on the shelves behind the books. It will not work for all the pest. Best to identify what the pest is. That way you can seek a proper course of action.

Hi Norm, the best method I know of is to " NUKE " your infected books in the microwave. Just be sure to put a weight on the book after to prevent the pages warping.

Hi Norm, polish your bookshelves with lavender scented beeswax furnisher polish. Book and woodworm hate the stuff.
