It depends on the application and making and breaking capacity of the switching elements, but I would think that using a separate contactor would have far more advantages for example remote motor control starting and stopping, switching life, etc over switchgear (which is generally used for isolation and possibly protection if fitted with fault interrupters, etc rather than repeatedly load breaking a high current load).

Sure you could use switchgear, but automating switchgear for remote operation is expensive (if it can be done at all - it depends on the model and brand of switchgear), and it is not as flexible as using a separate contactor.
