Which Linux Distro are you using?

What is the make and model of the usb to serial cable? What are you connecting to the RS-232 end?

Linux quite often has the drivers already built in for these types of drivers. If so, when you plug the usb to serial adapter in to one of your usb ports, you should see a new entry in the /dev folder, probably named something like "ttyUSB0". Different versions of Linux may name the port something else.

To communicate with the port, you will need to know the port settings for the device you are plugging in to the RS.232 end of the adapter. There are a number of packages (my personal favorite being "cutecom") that can then be used to test your communications with the device.

If you can provide more information about what you are trying to accomplish, I can help you get hooked up.
