Spacers in GIS

06/07/2012 5:31 AM

In Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), there are two types of spacers, which are gas barrier and gas through insulator. I would like to know what the differences between them are.

The gas through insulator allow gas flow to another gas compartment, so what is the purpose of having it?

In both types of spacers there is a requirement to insulate the conductor(s) within the GIS from the (conductive, grounded) shell or casing. The gas barrier type separates two gas compartments that you want to keep divided (so that it may be possible to do maintenance or testing on one without removing the SF6 gas from both). The gas-through insulator only separates the conductor(s) from the casing within a section of GIS where you don't need to isolate different gas compartments.
