Drum Level Glass

06/09/2012 2:44 AM

WHY BOILER DRUM LEVEL GAUGE GLASS ISOLATING VALVES ARE INVERSE? NORMALLY BALL VALVE OPEN WHEN IT IS PARALLEL TO THE LINE AND CLOSE IF THE PERPENDICULAR TO LINE. SO IN DRUM LEVEL GLASS ISOLATING VALVE ARE INVERSE IN DIRECTION, WHY?

I would blame the valves, not the drum level sight glass. Check the valve handle orientation to ensure they are mounted properly. The sight glass should only be a visual double check to ensure your sensor readings are accurate on the water / steam level in the drum.

  • Gravity
  • Fail Safe

Should the packing be loose and thus let the handles "fall", the valve will always be open. Kind of silly since the steam/water will also be passing at that point (or shortly thereafter) but, the intent of the ancient boiler designers is clear.

I can't remember the exact reason but I do believe that it is some kind of standard.

Swimming Pool valves are exactly the same
