Air Compressor Type Selection

06/15/2012 7:53 AM

Hi All,

I want to know about the guidelines that need to be taken into account for selection of compressor type ( rotary screw, centrifugal etc..). My requirement is 12m3/min at 7.5 bar instrument grade air. What type of compressor will be most feasible for me. Would appreciate if i could get a document on the guidelines for the same.

regards

For such a low requirement even reciprocating compressor with drier is enough.

It's not that small. Assuming compressor efficiency 65% shaft power is about 90 kW.

Yes codemaster, you are right. OP should cantact compressor OEM' like Atlas Copco Energas, Engersal Rand or Elliat for further guidance.

Thanks Vesyen.

Pictures are good. Appreciate if i could get the same image in a larger size. Its not readable for me.

Oil free rotary compressors are rather expensive machines with more maintenance required than the oil injected counterparts and the maintenance in itself is more expensive. Correct me if i am wrong.

Moreover in the 80's a large number of fire incidents were reported in oil injected rotary screw compressors. Any thoughts on why this happened and the safeties that have been now put in place to avoid such hazards?

12 m3/min or 424 cfm @ 10 barg, so a rotary screw one could be accceptable. There´re a wide gamma of brands even the oil free offers migth be having in account. Apart of a dryer and after cooling system, as you mention an " instrument air grade", it must consider a downstream regenerating twin tower so you can reduce the humidity ppm in acceptable values for that application.
