Fire Rated cables & wires

05/14/2007 8:16 AM

Hi,

i would like to know if somebody can help me in finding in the web regarding any international standars talking about the importance of using fire rated cables for the Fire Alarm System and related equipments connected or interfaced with FA system like fans, my request is for power cables feeding the fans and wires for the internal loops for various accessories of FA system ( smoke detectors, evacuation speakers, telephone jack, etc...)

Thanks

The fire alarm regs (BS 5839) are very specific about what should be wired and certain guidelines and criterias that should be meet

You should use FP200 or M.I.M.S to wire the installation. addressable, self-addressable or conventional, this includes 230 RMS power suppys aswell

You can get away with using normal twin and earth but only for the smokes detectors!!!!!! the supply cable to your panel has to be fire rated I.e Fp200 or M.I.M.S nothing else. All interface units are wired on with the fire alarm loop anyway which is again FP or M.I.M.S. All "normal open" control gear shouldn't normally have to be fire rated because when the fire burns through the cable there gona close anyway and kill the supply, example Door magnets, alarm systems ETC

To be honest you need to explan more of what you are trying to achieve in order to get a better answer, the information i gave are good guidelines for a fire alarm install. Get a copy of BS 5839. for more info.
