EMP & Flare Protect Solar Array

07/11/2012 12:19 PM

EMP & solar flare, protection of PV array? The MOG boat has an array of two panels of 3 modules each. Nominal down feed to controller is 72V@20A. With a warning... is protection technology available that is stowable, deployable & with a cost below $2,000? A 40x12' copper faraday box is the theoretical item of replacement here. Such ideas as a metallic/polyester fabric or thin metal plates over each module's aluminum frame with conductors (to a water grounding plates), etc. The two panels are about 4x16'. Is there something of which you know that may be available?

I doubt you will have to worry about a solar flare unless you intend to travel above the atmosphere.

Ordinary aluminum screen makes for a decent Faraday cage covering. It could be deployed very rapidly from a roll and it would allow some light to continue to enter the solar array.

Perhaps a good general topic for discussion would be a question along the line of this: Could the average person expect to actually have any warning about a solar flare or EMP in time to do anything about it? After all, an EMP travels at the speed of light and the satellites around the earth would be the first devices destroyed. After that, the power grid would be destroyed. Only if you were ready for it in advance would you have any time to do anything about it.
