Title 24 Class B Flame Spread and Smoke Testing ASTME84/NFPA701

07/14/2012 4:20 PM

After doing some research the past few days regarding the testing methods used to determine flame spread and smoke I have run into a problem determining the proper test.

The material is a ULV0 compliant PVC approximately 1/8" thick. It is used an interior finished product in the position at the wall and ceiling height as a crown molding.

I am finding several options that seem to be compliant to ASTM E84 depending upon the materials used. Seems that the two notable tests are the Steiner Tunnel test and the corner burn test.

After reviewing the Steiner test method, I'm not sure how any plastic material could get a favorable result.

After dealing with testing facilities in the past, they seem to have policies in place that prevent them from recommending tests.

Is anybody familiar with the particular test that I should focus on?

Thanks you,

Mike

Why are you testing?

What spec do you have to meet?

All ASTM documents specify the tests required to qualify the product to that specification.

Is NFPA the base document?

More detail please.

-Plastic crown molding...currently UL 94 VO compliant

-ASTM E84 Class B rating for flame spread and smoke.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
