Rusty Microwave Oven

07/18/2012 3:50 PM

can anyone recommend the type or make of paint to touch up the inside of my microwave. The bottom where the turntable rollers run have worn away the paint, allowing rust to form. Have tried "google" but not much help

The oven works fine, just looks dirty! thanks in advance.

You tried "google"? There's your problem, google's not meant to cover rust.

I can't think of any reason that a white appliance paint, properly applied and dried would not be fine.

White pigment is probably TiO2 and it's not conductive. That's just my opinion.

I was thinking along those lines.. but I wanted a second opinion before going ahead.... last thing i'd want to use is Hammerite or some heavy lead based paint.

My "google" search, using your suggested product key words has produced a few in the UK.. so will call them tomorrow.

If I've told you this before, excuse me. My wife's mother was born in Llandudno.

Personally I would go to Walmart and buy a new microwave.

$60 and everything is new.

Have you thought about the volatile compounds from new paint contaminating your food?

I would have to agree with GW. When your microwave was manufactured, it was most likely powder coated, no hydrocarbon solvents, after it came out of the oven, coating was 100% cured meaning no VOC's leaching out. Any "wet" type paint as in a spray can will have VOC's leaching out for a while, even water based. Safer just to buy a new Microwave.

Another option might be to use some steel wool to remove the rust, then clean it and rub some cooking oil or wax in the bare metal.

Gentlemen.. many thanks for your comments and suggestions. I have passed all onto the "Boss" and she has told me to go buy a new microwave.

I was in Gulf War 1 & 2, and caught in the Libyan revolution.... but there is no way I'm gonna argue with "she who must be obeyed".

Wall Mart (the UK branch) here I come!!

(My wife wouldn't have given me a choice... Hi dear, the microwave was rusty and I know you haven't got the time to fix it so I saved you the trouble and bought a new one.)

Gee, now it makes the rest of the kitchen look... outdated. Don't you think we should freshen it up a bit?

So now you have a microwave oven for the shed.

Sweet. Keep the rustic patina.
