Single Phase Motor Test Bench with VFD

07/20/2012 7:15 AM

Guys , I am offering a test bench to a Motor Manufacture for testing 1 Phase 230VAC induction motor. I want to load the test Motor with a suitable Induction generator, and want to make the system regenerative type with Active front end (AFE) drives.

I am not finding any VFD/Drive/Inverter which will run the test motor at various speed, voltages ??

Can any one tell if such VFD are available which can run the single phase motors ??

Motor range is from 20W to 4000W

So how are you offering something you don't have that probably does not exist as well?

If you understood how a single phase electric motor worked you would also know why a VFD unit for such motors don't exist.

Also why would an electric motor manufacturer not already have all the necessary equipment to test their products in the first place?

If they know enough about electric motors to build them they also know enough about them to be able to design their own testing devices as well.

There are a very few mfrs of VFDs for single phase motors. Invertek in the UK is one of them, and you will find several others offering it under their own brand names, but they are almost all the same Invertek drive. But they ONLY work on 2 SPECIFIC types of single phase motors; PSC (Permenent Split Capacitor) and Shaded Pole types. This is because all other types of single phase motors have speed switches and capacitors, something that transistors don't like. PSC motors have caps too, but they are connected in such a way that they are OK. The others are not, so you end up with a race to see if the transistors will fry or the capacitors will swell and burst.

Your question is a little confused.

Is the motor to be tested "across the line" and you want to make an induction motor / generator to load test it?

If so a 3 phase AC regenerative drive for your application would work. ABB makes 4 quadrant 3 phase AC drives in the range you specify.

You will also probably need to mount your test generator in gimbals and measure the torque and speed produced to calculate power.

I went through many of your posts and am appalled by what I saw.

My quick analysis is that you are trying to run a business that sells motor drives systems for industrial applications but you don't know much about them. You use the contributors of this site as the "expert" for your business.

This scares me as you will eventually cause some bad problems for your customers. I hope that you will be lucky enough to avoid casualties.

You cannot run a knowhow business by borrowing knowledges from a bunch of strangers on the net!

Go to school and learn the trade or sell vacuum cleaners...
