Rectifier welding machine

what happens when we measure DC output current by Selecting AC currrent in Clamp Meter( Tong Tester ) say Welding machine Input Current measured is 10 Amps and output current measured is 49 amps by Ac selected in tong tester.

Tong testers measure the "true RMS" current regardless of waveform. In other words they measure the average of number of electrons passing the tester. It does not matter what direction (AC changes direction, DC same direction). It is actually measuring the magnetic field given off by the current.

In AC setting it is the RMS value of the waveform.

In DC Setting it is the DC + RMS of any ripple.

A welder takes the input power and puts it through an adjustable transformer. The output is lower voltage and higher current.

AC types will not meaasure DC. DC use hall effect devices AC use a coupled turn transformer.

The AC tong tester will measure only the AC ripple current. The DC amps will not register. Hence, filtering will affect the relationship between the AC & DC in the output.

Tong-Testers when put on AC Range will measure only the Ripples in charging current so if are True RMS tester it is AC RMS current converted from Ripple current
