I am doing a few things for a makerfaire and intended to do the vortex plant with a fish pass. A real simple demo. The plan was to let water through the central whirlpool vortex and through another hole exactly the same size at the side where it would get the least pressure from the incoming water and no vortex. Just let the water fall through and measure the different amounts through the holes. PROBLEM! The water goes slower through the vortex hole than through the other one. I have seen many videos of guys swirling water in pop bottles (have done it myself) and the water streams out much quicker due to the vortex. Not this type of vortex!

So I did a little model and another weird thing happened. I have a vortex and it fills the container but when you put in the "turbine", (even though it is now blocking the vortex and sucking a bit of power out of the system), the water is now going faster through the hole!
I guess if you are really into this stuff, none of this surprises you. Video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPh4GymUGSg I tried several different "turbines". It was informative but I have no clue how to do the fishpass now.
