Single Scada Station

08/10/2012 3:15 PM

Hello everyone,

We have a water treatment plant where each system has got its own PLC and SCADA. We are planning to have a central system which would integrate all the other SCADA stations and existing system would remain as is.

We are planning to try this inhouse, existing system consists of 2 allen bradley SLC 5 PLC and 2 allen bradley Micrologix 1200 and all the scadas are on RSView 32. All the PLC are connected to respective SCADA stations over RS232 DF1.

My idea was to install a USB to COM convertor ,using this i will get additional COM ports for all the SCADA stations and all this will be connected to a central SCADA PC over USB again using converter without disturbing existing system.

I wanted to now whether it is possible to have a SCADA station with all PLCs connected to it which are already communicating with other SCADA stations, some suggested that it is not possible on RS232 and is only possible in Server-client architecture. Need the way ahead.

Thanks and regards

It's certainly possible, Boss, though you may need to invest in a network and some parts to connect them. Have you talked to your local Allen Bradley parts supplier for some advice and a quotation?

The SLC 5/03 has 2 serial ports. The SLC 5/05 has 1 serial, and 1 Ethernet port. Please be specific - details matter.

It sounds as if your idea is to add additional serial ports to each of your standalone SCADA station, linked back to a centralized SCADA station. This will require you to write additional code at each SCADA station, which will take the incoming data from the PLCs, and retransmit it to the central station. Why do that?

If you have SLC 5/03's (the Micrologix 1200 has 2 serial ports), then connect up the central SCADA to the second serial port on the PLCs directly. That will require you to write a new APP for the central SCADA system however.

Your best bet is to contact your AB/Rockwell supplier and ask them what options are available for the central SCADA to import the graphics and databases from the stand-alone systems; and then receive it's data via OPC, NetDDE or other communications protocol.

There is a nice little device by Red Lion called a Productivity Station that you may want to look at. It is made just for the kind of task you described. Probably a lot less money than an AB solution and a lot easier.

Thanks guys for your help, its greatly appreciated.
