He wants to gain illegal access to a secure facility, and he needs to know the name of the electronic logbook so he can hack into it, beforehand.

Card Access ingress/egress used with secured Turn-style(s) coupled with a computer to totalize who has entered/exited.

Start with a Google search of "Card Access Control System".

Interesting. has this sort of thing become widely accepted?

It's been a few years since I have visited a facility where headcount tally was maintained, but it was still the brass-tag-on-a-hook type system. I quizzed my client about it, and he advised this was still the preferred method, because in a circumstance requiring emergency response an accurate count of personnel inside varied parts of the facility could be indicated to each and every responder passing through the entry point. In such an event, this saved time and reduced confusion.

Another electronic system, as you described, was also in place for employee time and attendance, visitors and their escorts... those sorts of data. But EVERY person entering or leaving was monitored to be certain his tag was added to, or removed from, the big board.

Hey there Doorman,

Yes, pretty much accepted as far as I have seen.

I remember the brass badges from the past but have not seen those in about 10 years although I am sure they are still used.

As far as electronic monitoring, for instance, two plants that I am currently working in, one that manufactures train locos and the other produces electricity use the "in/out badge system" for time keeping and inventory control of personnel. This is typical coupled with a turnstile which only allows one person per swipe.

In addition, for restricted areas within the plant, the badges will allow or deny access to certain individuals as well as track who has accessed or attempted to access restricted areas.

Each plant has a computer console set up at the ingress/egress points of the plant. In the event of an emergency, first responders can access and get a list of names and departments of personnel on-site.

We use this type of system at our office to separate the office area from the tool area, from the material area, from the equipment area.

Regards - KJK

I'm with ya.

I'm certain the technologies available today (at reasonable cost) to account for people and clearly display their general whereabouts with constantly updated info is common. The facilities I generally visited had been in place for decades and seemed comfortable with the brass tag setup. You do bring some good points to this discussion.

As with so many posts here at CR4, we don't know if we are responding to the correct question.

Back in the day, we (workers) had a time card and punched in and out at the gate.

The supervisor for each section would have a log book or a file or sheet showing who was present on any shift.

Many companies do still have a physical book at the security desk/reception, for visitors to sign in. That book might be called a 'visitor register book'.
