You will never build one for less than what you can buy a good new or used one for.

Could you give us any less information?

Could you be more specific?

"high wattage"

How much high?

Please throw all your cards on the table first, for all to see what exactly you want to know.

Most PWM controlling is done by a microcontroller today. The microcontroller then controls either an SCR or IGBT to actually steer the current to the motor. (I'll leave it to the student to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each of these component selections.) To copy somebodies hard work of a three phase motor controller design you will also need to have the source code of the microcontroller. This is typically written in C, C++ or assembly language.

I see a lot of homework in your future.

Yes, Guv. Anyone can do this when they have the details off the motor rating plate.

3 phase variable speed (or variable frequency) drives are common and very inexpensive for what they are, they are however ridiculously complex and expensive to build yourself, so just go and buy one.

You will NOT be able to build one cheaper than what you can buy one for, and it is not suitable or safe for a DIY project due to the complexity and amount of equipment required to build and program the microcontroller, switch mode power supply, DC energy storage systems, etc.

Jack - Actually services these things.

Aw, now you spoiled some of my fun.

I was really going to enjoy the fantasy of this OP going through all of the learning curve of switch mode supply design, microcontroller programming, three phase inductor motor starter circuitry and the obligatory troubleshooting required to not just buy something off of the shelf.

.......and the few thousand dollars worth of necessary test and programming equipment.

It really is a most difficult and expensive project, and even the experts that manufacture the VFDs don't get it right all the time as I have found.
