Landmark Papers on Higgs Boson Freely Available Online

09/14/2012 3:26 AM

All five papers are available online and free of charge (pun intended) from ScienceDirect.

Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC

Observation of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Combined results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

Combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson using up to 4.9 fb−1 of pp collision data at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

and finally,

Peter Higgs' original paper (dated 15 September, 1964) in which he proposes the existence of new field which accounts for the origin of mass. Both the field and the particle (which mediates it) eventually came to be named after him:

Broken symmetries, massless particles and gauge fields

Tomorrow (Sept 15) marks the 48th year since the paper's initial publication in Physics Letters.

You are punny.

So, does this prove that the Higgs field exists? Can a Higgs field be human made to cancel out the mass of an object? If so, can speed greater than light can be obtained?

Hi StandardsGuy,

If it were possible I would love to award you with "Good Question".

There are so many possibilities that are just itching to be studied with the lid now starting to lift on the Higgs.

My problem is I am still struggling to just understand gravity. (There are times in this struggle where I think that gravity is winning.)

Let me ask Peter Higgs. Gimme a sec (he's out standing in his field)....

So Higgs Bosun walked into the church. The priest said, "sir, we don't believe in you, you cannot be in here!" So Higgs Bosun said....

You know, you can't have mass without me.....

Da dum dum

Peter Higgs steps up to podium: "The particle whose discovery was officially announced recently has been called by various names over the years; 'Higgs boson' and 'The God Particle' currently being the two most popular, but all of it very confusing, and so please allow me to stop right here make one thing perfectly clear: I'm Higgs."

A horse walked into a bar. The bartender said "Why the long face?"
