66kV Indoor GIS Circuit Breaker & Isolator Comparison

09/24/2012 9:54 AM

Dear All,

This question I am putting up more from economical aspect than technical.

I want to know now a days most of the switchgear manufacturers are standardizing their items, is it still very economical to look out for the possibility of using an isolator to avoid the use of circuit breaker? (In case of indoor 33kV or 66kV GIS)

Isolator cost = X% of Circuit breaker cost (Same rated current & withstand capacity)

If anyone can give tentative value of "X" in above equation, it will be very helpful.

An Isolator and a Circuit Breaker are two different pieces of equipment serving two different purposes. While a CB can substitute for an Isolator the opposite is not true. An Isolator does not have any load-break/make capability. Its main purpose is to isolate a section of bus to prevent energization in the event that a breaker inadvertently closes. It is there for maintenance/safety, not protection, purposes.

Load break fault make isolators are also available in the market and can be procured if specified during purchasing. However, their purpose is entirely different as explained by RAMConsult. Moreover, the circuit breaker is provided with trip coil which is energised when the trip relay gets activated in case of faults e.g. short circuit, over current, earth fault etc. etc. This protection function is not available in isolator.

For pricing information you may consult any of the local suppliers indicating your technical requirements as the price is sensitive to country of origin and the technical parameters laid down in the specification.
