STL files...

05/18/2007 3:53 PM

Is there a way to "fuse" or merge two independently imported STL files and then create a single STL as a result? I am trying to rapid prototype a model, but half of it is 100% modeled in Solidworks and the detailed part was actually hand sculpted and digitally scanned. I am now trying to combine both of these STL files so that I can prototype them as 1 solid. Any ideas?

Can't you import the STL as a solid then do a boolean add operation to combine the two?

Well you have to solidify and merge both body geometry and regenerate a single STL file. Are you using SOLIDWORK?

I HAVE USED MESHWORKS TO MAKE STL MODELS, IMPORTED THEM INTO NX AND MADE MODELS WITH EDITED THEM...HOWEVER I CANT EXPORT THEM...IF YOU COULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO EXPORT THEM THEN NX WOULD BE YOUR SOLUTION HUNT8989@YAHOO.COM

That's the problem - you can't merge a solid model with an STL file because Solidworks doesn't recognize the STL as solid geometry, but rather, it sees it as simply a graphic.

Carcru:

Try these guys, http://www.handyscan3d.com/.

They have a hand held 3D scanner system which outputs files in .stl format for SW.

I am sure if you talk to one of their apps people they have a work around in SW for you. I have the same problem with a car fender I had scanned and wanted to modify in SW. Unfortunately, I have to brute force it out and recreate the fender in SW using the .stl file.

Good luck

But you could make a solid box around your stl file then subtract it from your box and then fill it to get your solid file.
