Multispeed motor starters: Motor windings in multispeed squirrel-cage motors may require special starters.

Go here: Motor starters - Electric Motors & DC Motors - Machine Design

Pretty common, I guess.

Good luck.

A multi-speed MOTOR is a motor which has a winding configuration that allows it to spin at different distinct speeds depending on what winding, or winding pattern, or voltage, is selected. To do so, you need a way of selecting the different speeds and that would be a multi-speed STARTER. That can be two speeds, or three speeds, I've even seen 4 speeds, although that is rare. There are multiple types of multi-speed motors, too many to describe here, especially since you don't offer what your power supply is.

The alternative is a Variable Speed situation, which has then another bunch of sub-groups. But Multi-speed and variable speed are NOT the same thing. Variable speed implies INFINITELY variable (up to the maximum design speed of course).

Refer pole-changing motor and starter.
