ADSL Router

10/05/2012 2:58 PM

Hi all, first of all, i don't have advanced knowledge about computer networking etc. So sorry in advance if i am wrong.

problem is: i have a adsl wireless router

http://www.scribd.com/doc/43418422/An1020-25-User-Manual

it has 4 ports of LAN and a WLAN. (see details in the above link)

Currently i am using internet provided from my neighbour's home network switch. Its a simple LAN cable directly connected to my PC LAN card.

What I want: i want to use/configure this router in such a way that my PC should be connected to LAN as well as i could use wifi on my laptop/smart phone also.

Please tell me how can i do that?....what this terminology is called?

What you need is a Wireless Access Point (WAP) not a Router. They are usually bundled as a Wireless Access Point/Repeater.

Some routers can be configured as a WAP.

The WAP/Repeaters generally allow the following functions:

1) A wireless to wired bridge;

2) A wireless Access point;

3) A wireless to wired bridge.

4) A wireless repeater (in this mode, it repeats a wireless network and also creates a wired one.

Furthermore, the device can act as a DHCP server with it's own set of IP addresses for the wireless side.

A WAP/repeater only needs to be plugged in an configured. It will then repeat a wireless signal and you can use the Ethernet port on the device to connect to a wired device. I use one at home that sits on top of a China Closet in the Living room. Without it, I have a hard time receiving a good wireless signal about 6' from it's location. It also allows coverage from the porch and back yard.

You obviously have a good friend who lets you share his internet account. You don't need the ADSL port at all. Plug the Ethernet cable from next door into a LAN port of the router, and the Ethernet cable from your PC into another LAN port. Your neighbour's router will assign addresses for your computers. You have to configure your computers to reach the internet via "another computer". This must already have been done for the wired PC and you will have to repeat the exercise for the laptop and smartphone. It is still important to set the wireless security options withe a good password.

It depends if the router can be configured as an "Access Point". I have a Belkin Router than can and I am using it as an Access Point.

The router would be assigned a fixed STATIC address on his LAN and DHCP and NAT would be disabled.

The "friends" router will be doing NAT and DHCP. IP addresses will be assigned by your friends router or static address would be assigned by your friend. Your "friends" router has to be told not to assign addresses via DHCP for the addresses in the static range.

The LAN ports on "your router" will work as a switch. You create the wireless network.

It's not plug and play.

I simply

1.reset the factory settings.

2.connect the router to my frind's LAN cable in "LAN1" port and connect my pc to "LAN4" port.

I didn't do any settings. Now internet is running on my pc and wifi also working

There is a problem here.

As I said above, I connected my friend's LAN cable in LAN1 port and connected my PC with LAN4 port. Now, Internet is working fine on my PC but wifi not. initially my smart phone connected via wifi but now its not. I checked it again on another smart phone but failed. Now what i need to do?

Note: i restored the router to factory settings and didn't do any custom setting myself.

You are one of the few askers to give us feedback on whether suggestions have helped or not, so thanks for that. I suspect that in restoring your router to factory settings you have eliminated any security password setup you may have had. An unsecured wireless network really is a bad idea, so make sure you have a strong password enabled. Next, on your smartphone, search for available networks, and join the appropriate network, using the appropriate password to log in.
