How to Remove the Odor of Hydroponic Solution

10/06/2012 4:01 AM

Hydroponic solution includes many dissolved chemicals, including NO3 or other nitrogen compounds.Such nitrogen compounds cause unpleasant smell. As I want to create indoor gardening, I can't accept such smell.Any dissoluble additive can cover such smell and causes no harm to plant. Thanks

Usually with indoor hydroponics you want to hide more than the smell....!

Are you wanting to cover or to neutralize the odor? Most odor counteractants target organic molecules so you are likely stuck that way. NO3- do you mean ammonia (NH3) or nitric acid acid (HNO3)? The best way to control odors in these cases is usually through solution percentage reduction and pH control, as well as carefull attention to chemical combinations that could cause these problems. Ozone air purification at the source MAY also be an option.

Logged in for no other reason than to say that "hide more than the smell" comment made me laugh. Nice.

Have a Great Day,

Most hydroponic chemical do not cause a smell. If you are using soil based fertilizer that is a the problem. There is no reason to sterilize to any extent fertilizers for the soil. They usually have chemicals in it to promote bacteria growth in the soil. They may even have bacteria in them that helps break down organic matter in the soil. Other sources of odor is from poorly maintained systems. You don't want to let bacteria grow in the solution or organic matter from the plants decay in it.

I have had hydroponic systems with no bad odors.

Commercially available Activated carbon granules filter block may facilitate filter out the odors. The granules have internal volume adsorption pores where the graphite plates are very close together creating higher energy. The higher energy facilitates adsorption of odor causing contaminants. A Van Der Waal adsorptive force enables this to occur.
