SpaceX's Falcon 9 Rocket

10/07/2012 8:43 PM

Is it just me or was the flame from tonight's Falcon 9 rocket a lot more red than Delta and Shuttle launches? Most of the other rockets have a light yellow flame.

I missed the launch.

However, the Falcon 9 uses RP-1 kerosene as the propellent.

The Delta is LOX/Liquid Hydrogen as was the main engine of the Shuttle. The boosters for the Shuttle were SRBs (solid propellent).

That might explain it.

Didn't the Saturn V burn kerosene also? That was before I moved to Florida. Did the Saturn V's flame look more red than the Delta and Shuttle flames?

Saturn V engines were hydrogen oxygen liquid propellant.

I thought that the SaturnV burned Hydrazine with LOX as the oxidizer.

I heard it had an engine failure/shutdown 1:19 into the launch, but the primary payload was delivered as planned.

Looks like the Orbcomm OG2 telecommunication satellite may have a problem though.

Yep, the Saturn first stage was a kerosene / nitric acid affare. The flame was yellow. The H2 / O2 flame of the shuttle is colorless to blue.
