Help With Difference in 304SS and 310SS?

10/11/2012 9:36 AM

I'm sure this question has been asked many times but i need to make sure you understand why i'm asking because i'm clueless on this. I'm an MRO sales rep and i work in a machine shop. I have a customer who sent a drawing of some long and short muffle tubes that they get from Japan on a blanket order every year. I gave the drawing to one of the engineers here and he said that it calls for 310SS which he can only get overseas and the minimum order is 1 ton...the order itself for a year is only about 800lbs worth. I dont know enough about the difference between 304SS and 310SS to say whether or not 304SS would be a good substitution. I dont know what theyre using the muffle tubes for so i cant judge it by that. The purchasing department sends the quotes out and they dont know any other information to help me on this. We can get the tubes(they're in metric)in 304SS from a vendor and machine the rest per the drawing ourselves. But i was just wondering if there are any specific differences between the materials that i need to address. I can email the engineering department questions about the drawing but it will take 2 weeks to get a response if i dont have simple yes or no answerable questions for them. Sorry i know this is confusing and i'm rambling but this is a huge order and i'd really like to learn a bit more about 310SS anyway since i'd never come across it before.

If the customer specified 310, I'd say the probability of his letting you substitute 304 is about zilch. This is probably a high-temperature application, where 310's higher chromium and nickel content is beneficial. 310 should be available domestically - maybe the issue is the form and size required. Rolled Alloys may be able to help you (usual disclaimers).

I'm assuming its because of the specifications on the drawing as well. It's a drawing from a company in Japan and its a metric muffle tube. I checked with a few places on getting them in 310 but no one has it available which is why we looked overseas. Is rolled alloys another company who may have access to these tubes in 310? Thanks for your response. And you were right. Customer said no bending room on the material type.

Yes, www.rolledalloys.com . Don't let the 'Rolled' throw you off. I think it's a left-over from their original business specialty. I've never dealt with them directly. They now have locations world-wide, so maybe they can help. Welcome aboard.

I checked with rolled alloys but they said they cant provide the tubes. Here is what i know as of now. The furnace these tubes go in runs at 1980F and thats apparently why they want 310ss. Rolled Alloys stocks 310ss tubing but not in the sizes i need. The OD is 23mm and the ID is 19mm. It has to be exact. And we are supposed to get them in 20ft sticks so we can saw them and then lathe them per the customers drawings. I really am running out of ideas on this one. We did at least get to visit and see the facility and the muffle tubes theyre using right now. Made me feel like a total nerd but that was definitely a lot of fun.
