We are moving to a plant of doble zize, it is in the same city, we are trying to not loose too much production, I like to have feedback of bad experiences that you have with a movment and some tips to prevent and minimize any mistake.
This is a project management challenge / opportunity, so remember the basics of project management are the integration of: 1:technical performance 2:costs 3:schedule ALL to be accomplished within good customer relations
FIRST STEP: You should interview every key player to ask them what the implications of the move will be for THEM, to establish a list of criticalities of each and every key person
SECOND STEP: Analyse all user criticalities of the move, to establish conflicting criticalities. If necessary go interview them some more so you understand ALL of their requirements
THIRD STEP: Establish a plan for the move to the best information you have
FOURTH STEP: Convene a meeting of key people (your customers) to point out to them the conflicting requirements, and present your plan (which of course will be shot down in flames but this does not matter) to get their attention
FIFTH STEP: Tell them they are not leaving the meeting without getting their agreement of the plan that THEY must put together, which could be a modification of your plan
SIXTH STEP: You've planned the work, now work the plan
A little more that a year ago I controlled the move and set up of all machinery in our factory. Had every thing going fine until someone decided during the set up that they would paint the machines and carts just about everything. So the production employees spread all over the floor and painted. They set up where machines needed to be placed and anchored down. Blocked the isles for lift truck travel. Paint machines that had not been located so they were located with wet paint then repainted. What a nightmare.
list are useless if someone can throw a wrench into the mess they will. best to set down with management and come up with that list. Less unexpected situations will come about.
