Oxide On Spring Wire

11/01/2012 3:01 AM

Hi, we see a lot of oxide on the drawn and then hardened spring wire under the microscope. this poses a lot of difficulty, can anybody help know the cause of oxide formation ?? is it coming from improper/inefficient pickling(hcl) ?? please help !!

Oxide formation is caused by exposure to oxygen and moisture.

Remove one or the other and oxides cannot form.

Not sure why the pickling doesn't work. Maybe something to do with the environment the spring is subjected to. I'm no chemEng but also, isn't Hcl unstable?

Peharps an alternative anti-oxidation solution is in order. Check out the products offered by this company in Houston, TX.

I have no affiliation with that company nor is this an endorsement.

I am simply aware of the use of such products in the Port of Mombasa where metals would otherwise be slowly but surely consumed by the corrosion from the saline humidity.
