Looking for Paper Honeycomb Cores

11/07/2012 5:12 PM

I'm looking for a supplier of expanded honeycomb made from paper/cardboard to use for cores inside steel doors. Looking for 1" to 1-1/2" cell size...1-5/8" thick approximately 36" x 96". My business is located in the Midwest.

Look here. You don't need us for this.

Paper Honeycomb Core | Packaging | Panels, Doors and Furniture ...
There is a commercial section here, and this tool Search GlobalSpec.
Good luck, this stuff should be fairly common.
Never mind, Doorman will come along in awhile and help you more.

A dozen? Couple of hundred thousand? Couple of million?

Most of the American hollow metal players (as far as I know) buy cores offshore. There is one exception.

Alibaba provides a good shopping list. As lyn says, this is a pretty common item, not very difficult to source. Are you trying to comply with some version of BAA, or LEED points?

I'm only looking for 300 to 400. Leed points would help but it isn't a must.

A quantity like that will likely be difficult to attract a manufacturer.

An existing HM manufacturer would be my thought, but they may consider you a possible competitor and reject your request. Worth a try, I would think, to see where it leads.

You might try Mesker Door, Huntsville AL. These guys have been very cooperative with unusual requests I have had over the years. I have a better inside contact with another manufacturer in Iowa, if that is closer for you.

Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with Mesker and I'm assuming you're talking about Curries in Iowa. I have a call into Mesker to see if they would consider selling me cores. On another note...do you have any experience with hollow metal acoustical doors? I want to do some testing...deciding what type material to use as a core for the various STC ratings is tricky. I'd eventually like to get up to STC 54 but my immediate goal is the start with STC 42 through 48. Do you have any experience or knowledge on the subject??

Yes, Curries. I would be curious to know if Mesker sells you the core stock. I am inclined to think they would.

STC doors, eh? Sort of a black art. I think the existing players in that market guard their bags of secrets pretty closely; I have no direct knowledge of STC door cores. An observation: Do you believe you can really achieve STC54 with a 1-3/4" door?

When you finally arrive at a frame, door and hardware design, then you get to worry about ADA Title III, NFPA 80, UL63... blah blah blah blah.

You're right about the players guarding their secrets...that's why I'm searching for expertise. No, I realize the STC 54 would end up being thicker than 1-3/4". That's why I'd go after that test in phase 2. Thanks for your input!

I wasn't completely honest with you before. Divulging any direct knowledge of sound door construction (thus betraying trust) is something I cannot do for you.

The players all have technical information on their websites... some available tech data is useful, most is pretty vague. Some data mining of those sites might prove a useful leg up, but I see some extensive research and testing in your near future.

Best of luck; I will help you as much as I am able.
