How to Spread My Business Globally

11/16/2012 6:31 AM

I am an entrepreneur and in the business of manufacturing, supplying, wholesaling and exporting. I am an India based business man who is indulged in manufacturing high quality state of the art steel rolling mill machines and other useful machine parts & equipments like hot saw machine, automatic roller conveyor, shearing machine, and blah blah etc.

I wonder how can I spread my business so that I can get clients and deals from worldwide. Is SEO, SMO very necessary for this or what. And what about facebook page, google plus page or whatever. I am not willing to spend huge amount of money on the tv, radio, newspaper commercial ads. So please I would welcome if you suggest any idea, you can also see my website if you want for any analysis and suggestions.

Right now I am getting clients and customers from India only.

1. Are all your Indian clients very happy & recommending you to other up-coming steel industries in India?

2. Which countries are currently expanding in steel industry?

3. Where do you stand in the pecking order in your industry in India?

4. What is the current global economic scenario?

5. ….

6. ….

It will depend on many imponderables.

SEO matters a great deal. If you have an optimized website, you'll get far more hits from people doing random Google searches. Facebook and Google Plus pages aren't necessary and will probably be a waste of time for the manufacturing aspect of your business.

Since this website is powered by GlobalSpec, I'd be amiss if I didn't at least mention that you can put your services / products into a custom catalog through GlobalSpec, but that will cost you a couple bucks.

Hey Mizuti:

A quick suggestion here. While your use of 'amiss' is not technically incorrect, it does read a little awkwardly. 'Amiss' is not typically used in that way; in standard use it usually describes something like an object or an action, but usually not a person directly.

Probably, some where in the back of your head, 'remiss' was trying to get noticed, but the search was cut short when similar sounding 'amiss' volunteered.

.

Remiss has all the qualities I suspect you intended for the word placed in the spot in question.

.

I hope this comes of as it is intended...a usefull bit of information....and not as pedantic nitpicking.

Surely there are trade shows for your industry.

A booth in a trade show is not expensive, and allows one to target a specific audience of buyers.

A stack of brochures, a handful of business cards and a beaming smile should do it.

(You DO have a beaming smile, don't you?)

I am associated with an activated carbon filter company which is internationally recognized, by following the route as below.

  • Certification by Internationally recognized agencies, in our case it was by National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) and WQA (Water Quality Association) both of US origin.
  • Exposure at International exhibitions. In our case we are invariably present annually at WQA events at Amsterdam and Los Vegas.

These sort of activities are very expensive, but essential price for recognition at international market place.

I went to your web site, and don't quite understand what you do. It looks like you are a directory of other companies, not a manufacturer of anything. Or you could be a distributor or sales rep for all those companies.

Maybe your first order of business is to revise your web site so it accurately describes what you do.

But if you really are a manufacturer of machines, then my answer to your question is: Use good old-fashioned marketing communications.

1. Write and distribute company news and product releases to industrial magazines worldwide. This will get you publicity in the machine tool, machine control, design, manufacturing, and factory automation magazines and web sites--where people can find you by reading the magazine or searching on the internet.

2. Write technical articles and white papers about rolling mill machines and other devices that you manuacture. Place these in key factory automation and machine tool magazines.

3. Write "case history" application stories about how your customers use your machines. Place these in key factory automation and machine tool magazines.

The idea is to get free placements in magazines all over the world, and especially on their web sites. (see the material being published on http://www.machinebuilding.net/ in the UK and the machine tool newsletter on Globalpec http://www.globalspec.com/newsletter/pub/33/machine-tools-metal-working--this is pretty typical coverage.)

Getting published will drive traffic to your web site, where you sell them with Inbound Marketing--that is, your web page becomes a "surrogate salesperson" that provides a web site visitor with all the information he or she needs. The Landing Page for, say, your model XYZ rolling mill would have photos, a brochure, video, case histories, tech articles and everything a human salesperson would carry around in an attache case or laptop computer on a sales call. Such a landing page can convert a "just interested" visitor into a "ready to buy" customer who will pick up the phone or send an email to your sales department.

You'll need a good U.S. or UK-based industrial PR or marcom agency who knows machine tools (good luck with that!), knows how to write and place material, can talk to customers to develop case histories, and can help you develop brochures, videos and similar materials.

The strategy is simple, but the execution is hard. The cost for a good agency to do all this is probably US$60,000 to $120,000 per year--about the same as you'd pay for 10-15 print ads-- but it will generate 100 or 1000X the web traffic. Print ads don't generate web traffic.

If you really are a rep or distributor--not a manufacturer--then this strategy doesn't work.

Thanks for the reply and so many good suggestion.

Actually lately I was a type of distributor and our website listed different companies selling machine tools. But now I have also started manufacturing our own machines and tools.

Do i need to promote my business in different countries with different strategies and methods regarding SEO and SMO or whatever.

You ask, Do i need to promote my business in different countries with different strategies and methods regarding SEO and SMO or whatever?

Basic marketing communications, as outlined above, will get your messages published worldwide--first in English on the major sites, like automation.com, Thomasnet, Globalspec, etc. Then, web sites worldwide will take RSS feeds from these sites and "repeat" the news. This includes sites in China, Russia, etc., who will translate the news into their native languages. It is utterly amazing how fast word can spread worldwide thanks to the internet.

You'll be getting hits and inquiries from all over the world. The "language of engineering" is English, so you will be able to communicate with these potential customers via email and telephone.

But can you service a customer in the US or South Africa or France? Who does the install and ongoing service? As was just pointed out, you may need reps there.

The great thing about marketing communications is that it will identify areas where there is interest in your products. You may find that companies in, say, Australia and Korea are responding to your messages--but nobody in the US or Canada is interested. That says you may need to find a rep that can service Australia and Korea.

The other great thing about marketing communications is that it builds awareness and recognition of your company in the market. The more you get published on-line, the higher you appear in Google searches. After a year or so of getting published worldwide, more customers will be finding you.

But a truly successful marketing communications program may put you in the same position of a dog that chases cars--that is, what does the dog do when it finally catches one? If you are not able to respond adequately to a flood of inquiries and purchase orders, you'll be like that poor dog.

After just going through your web site I would like to comment as under:-

1.You are in business of steel machinery marketing or may be mfg. machines. In India and through out the world there is slump in this industry. So it is not easy for new comer to enter the market at this stage.

2.You do not have your own brand name, also you have not disclosed your address in web site for reasons best known to you. Firstly create a brand name, obtain ISO certification, "CE" quality marking, latter on for exports to U.S you will need "U.E" quality approval marking.

3.Industrial products produced in India and other Asian countries do not carry good name due to poor quality and workmanship how ever there are few Indian products who have established their name around the world. You will have to look at African and Asian markets for exports latter on you can explore the world markets.

4.You will have to appoint local agents with service back up.

These are few tips which you have to consider before launching your products in International markets.
