220 kV / 66 or 11 kV Step Down?

12/03/2012 9:19 AM

I working on a project with an area of about 5km X 2Km, My total power requirement would be around 200 to 300MVA. So m planning to have a 220kV Substation. My concern is which would be technically advisable:-

1. Stepping down 220kv directly to 11kv and feeding it the load centers through Ring Main units at various locations.

OR

2. Stepping down 220kV to 66kv and having three or four 66/11kV substations at different locations and from there feeding the load centers through Ring main unit.

Is it my imagination or are questions getting a bit more out of hand and more into the realms of major country infrastructure engineering projects.

In my professional opinion, and forgoing a peer-reviewed feasibility and engineering study by a professional consultancy, go with 2. over 1. due to the power levels involved.

There, that probably saved you a few months and tens of thousands of dollars. Now you can press forward with getting a proper engineering design done and giving me a GA tick (or a cheque).

For best results include this CR4 thread in the final engineering design for peer review (specifically the second paragraph summary).

10 out of 10 for imagination.

As we've gone along his projects become more fantastic.

Thanks, this is probably the most expensive question ever asked (and answered) on this particular forum that I can remember.

The area is 5x2=10 sq.km , seems to be big . But how the load will be distributed ?

2nd option seems to be better if load is not concentrated at one place.

You need substation and lots of 220kV-11kV step down transformer. 11kV feeders can deliver power in your 5km x 2km area. You need may be 10x11kV feeder to deliver 300MVA.

What about 220KV/33KV instead of 220KV/11KV?
