Hardware for House Safety

12/18/2012 9:52 AM

I am not an Engineer; I am looking for a hardware/software to install in my home for the safety of my old Granma.

It is a device that will allow me to receive a notice in my cell phone when she does NOT open the refrigerator, does not go to the bathroom or does not sleep on the bad, etc.

I will install sensor on every place I want to check daily, and if that event does not happens, (the sensor does not trig), and I need a system that could notify me by my cell phone.

I know that this system already exist, but I do not know the name of the company that provided it, and do not know the name for search for it.

All help will be appreciating.

Interesting thought... non-event detectors.

At first blush I am inclined to recommend PIR motion detectors scattered about the house. Does she have a cat or dog?

[edit] There are a few of these sorts of services already available.

A number of high-tech monitoring systems on the market now do what you can't: watch over your parents to make sure that nothing out of the ordinary is happening -- and report in to you, your computer, or a dispatcher when something does (for example, one of your parents goes into the bathroom and still hasn't come out an hour later). They usually cost about $200, plus a monthly monitoring fee of about $100. Some, like the QuietCare Plus, work with any PERS your parents already have but add motion detection and also monitor whether the house gets too warm or too cold. All this information is sent to a website that you can check any time, but QuietCare representatives are also on the lookout for anything out-of-the ordinary. Obviously, to avoid having your parents see you as Big Brother, you'll need to discuss the idea and make sure they're OK with it before buying.

In addition to Doorman's excellent response, you might also look at security cameras with built in motion detectors.

Here is one example: Security camera system with motion detection cameras

These things have spirit levels in them these days. So how about an app that senses that the thing is horizontal for part of the night and vertical for part of the day, and alarms if either of those two criteria are not satisfied? Meanwhile, you could always ring its telephone number for more information.

Elderly people have spirit levels in them? I am hesitant to ask where (anatomically) these are installed, or how large they are.

[edit] As I consider, my uncle John had a pretty constant spirit level... usually about 90 proof.

Will your idea work in the southern hemisphere?

We used to be able to tell when the old preacher was "filled with the spirit" just by smelling his breath.

I have a friend and high school classmate of my wife, Michael Murdock who does this for a living. He lives in Colorado and installed a system in his mother's house in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He worries about her living alone. It does not use privacy invading cameras or microphones, but sensors that monitor for movement, opening and closing the refrigerator, door sensors, etc. He was featured on a TV show about elder care about a year and half back.

He also does high-end house automation work as well.

I'm sure he could guide you to a system that meets your needs, bed sensors, and all that. Good luck with your quest.

Thanks for the tips. I unfortunately have a similar circumstance. My in laws are in this stage of their life. The mother in law is adamant about being able to do all the necessary things for both her and father in law (which she is not). This may be a way for the 2 great sister in laws to get a break from wearing their health down tiring to help mom and dad stay out of assisted living.

Keep your spirits high but don't pour down too much of it.

the real answer is go visit her!

I'm not certain she really wants detectors and who knows what all over the place - she really wants something warm and squishy with a pulse that can talk to her.

Failing that a single PIR detector in a hallway or area used to get to the bathroom, bedrooms kitchen etc. Proving the fridge door has opened doesn't prove she has eaten. An autodialer etc will get a message to your phone. Likewise a camera in a similar area.

Still think its a very poor second to visit.

well let's see....

Detectors tied to a small PLC then output to your smartphone via internet?

Household HVAC can already be tied to smartphone..

Whose up for a challenge?
