Solution Annealing As Per 'Nace' for 304l & 316l

12/20/2012 2:44 AM

In Bibliography of NACE Nstandard ASTM A 182 standard is referred . For Austenitic Stainless Steel Flange ( F 304L , F 316L .) with additional requirement of NACE MR 0103 ,NACE MR 0175 and ISO 15156 , we assume that heat treatment as per clause 7.3.1( direct quenching after hot working at specified temperature ) is acceptable , Kindly let us know whether our assumsion is acceptable to NACE or not?

In general practice forged flanges of above said material are quench in water tank subsequent to the forging , as it considered solution annealing is it correct?

The referred clause is from ASTM A182-2012 Standard under the Heading of Heat treatment.

There is no 7.3.1 clause mentioned below 'heat treatment' heading in ASTM A 182!The exact clause number is 6.3.1

6.3.1 Alternatively, immediately following hot working, while the temperature of the forging is not less than the minimum solutioning temperature specified in Table 1, forgings made from austenitic grades (except grades F 304H, F 316H, F 321, F 321H, F 347, F 347H, F 348, and F 348H) may be individually rapidly quenched in accordance with the requirements of Table 1.

You would need to contact NACE directly for a ruling.
