Scaffolding Works

01/07/2013 6:40 PM

Hi Guys..!

During scaffold erection; there is standard calculation how much the base would be in terms of its height..

How about its Safe Zone barricade... ?

Is there such study, thoughts or philosophy to determine the Safe Zone barricade during erection or dismantling activities....?

My only concern is just to prevent or minimise the injury caused by falling objects.

cheers...

Look down from above, establish the center of scaffold base. Measure the finished height of scaffold. Draw a circle around the center point of the base equal to the height of the scaffolding. Place safe zone somewhere outside of this circle.

Scaffold netting is also a relatively inexpensive fix when falling objects are a concern. It will just about prevent objects from hitting the ground.

A year ago I bought a roll 4' x 400' for about $100 USD to build safety netting under our overhead coating lines. Parts weighing several pounds would fall from about 11' and smash anything in their path including the not so bright operators that would walk under line. This simple netting has totally prevented this issue.

I showed up for work early one day with the intention of taking down scaffolds on a two story building. About 30 years ago. I was on the top section sliding walkboards off the end when out of the corner of my eye I noticed the scaffold moving away from the wall. I never climbed down so fast in my life. I hit the ground about the same time as the scaffolding. Actually, it saved me a lot of work, but it was not a fun thing I promise you. When the boss showed up he asked me how I got it down so quickly, I told him it practically came down by itself.

All that aside, how high your scaffold is will be how far away it will fall, if it falls. Anything in between is a definate "Hard hat" area, and anyone working on or near any scaffolding has to be paying attention to whats going on around him for safety sake.
