Solid Surface Resin Countertops: Add Bauxite Versus Marble Powder?

Researching starting making solid surface countertops using resin. Apparently bauxite addition is the standard, but i know others who only use ca carbonate ( marble powder). Any advice?

Calcium carbonate will react with any acid (think vinegar- acetic acid). Coke has phosphoric acid in it. I think bauxite would be less reactive to spills of whatever might be spilled in a kitchen.

Bauxite is Aluminum Oxides. Very chemically stable and heat resistant and HARD. Calcium Oxides are much softer and water soluable over time. They will also absorb and react with acids and the kitchen is full of acids.

Silicates are a better alternative to Calcium. Think Quartz.

Carborundum is also a possibility...Carbon-Iron-Oxides.

Both substances are just bulking fillers, it is the % and type of resin that counts. The filler particulates should be fully coated with resin so acid attack will not be a problem on expensive worktops that carry a high ratio of resin:filler. For low quality worktops go for the less reactive filler, for high quality worktops go for the one that is more aesthetically pleasing to your cook.
