How Do I Draft a Template for Form Fit Function

01/10/2013 9:03 PM

Dear Friends...I been assigned to work with a team in a design project (precision plastic parts) which is new to me. Produced some prototype samples for product testing and i've been requested to draft a template for Form Fit Function and Usability tests which eventually serves as a record. I intend to do in a checklist format with criterias and statuses but not really sure. Any help with some sample templates which i can refer...

Form: does it look like it's supposed to?

Fit: does it fit where it's supposed to?

Function: does it do what it's supposed to do?

Usability: does it work?

Since you give no details that's about all.

Have you searched for a template?

my apologies as i was confused if by doing that i'm violating the laws or something...any how the part is the Radio Holster. A belt clip will be assembled to it and the test is on the radio with the battery to be fitted in the case (holster), and all i know is about that also, there's no print at the moment, i need to figure out the points to verify the form fit and function, the holster being the focus point, hope it helps.

The very sparse information you've given sounds more like you need to apprentice with a tailor that does custom clothes.

As the others have indicated, more info required.

"Precision plastic" probably means that you are at teh capability limits of the manufacturer that you are talking to and maybe there is another out there with a better skill/capability that would see your parts as "routine".

Regardless of the materials, your country's GD&T standards would provide guidance as to how to specify form/fit detail and how to monitor it.

One hint is that you need to identify which dimensions are truly important (potential interference or affect function) and which dimensions merely provide material to join those significant sections of the product. Then the effort is spent reviewing those that are important.

Depending on the end product, it would seem that you need some understanding of "Statistical Process Control". Probably "xBar and R charts" would be best for you to start with as most plastics companies understand that already.

You, on your own, need to figure out the meaning of the terms you are using.

Form, fit and function - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You'll also need a drawing of the part, material requirements, the list goes on and on.

We cannot impart knowledge into your brain. You must assimilate it by learning many things about the manufacturing process.

I suggest that you learn how to search for this information yourself, instead of asking people who know nothing about the product except it is a plastic holster.

I'll suggest one important quality. Retention of whatever goes inside.
Good luck.

Thanks for the facts. I referred to the Wiki and got a rough idea. The specifications of the form fit and function is a big help. When I wrote in this forum it was with intention of search for info but unfortunely lack of information. Appreciate all the inputs.

Why don't you make a model or a mock up of the holster using the phone. I would make a vacuum formed holster in two halves to hold the phone and then go from there..Actually, since the vacuum formed holster would probably be too tight of a fit I would make a slightly enlarged model of the phone out of wood and vacform that.
