GIS Practical Apps

01/18/2013 5:42 PM

cite: "Because all of the data layers are referenced to a spatial location on the earth's surface, they can be superimposed on one another using GIS software. This makes it possible to use the database to analyze the effects of these features on economic, demographic, and social dynamics. Therefore, while GIS is an efficient mapmaking tool, the real power of GIS lies in its analytical capabilities."

  1. Please list a brief entry if you have or planning to utilize(d) the GIS in your company - so the others can get started - it's not a must by any means

Imagine the day when we have telephones so small that you could carry one with you! First, there could be briefcase-sized units that you could put in you car. Eventually, there may even be pocket-sized devices. Imagine that these phones could display a map on a built-in portable TV. Then, imagine that these maps could show you where a restaurant is. In the distant future, there could be "layers" of data for each location, so if this phone somehow "knew" your location, it could show you a photograph of the environment around you, or could give you your altitude...

Sure, this sounds impossible now, but mark my words.
