DuPont Kevlar, one of the most widely used high performance materials turns 40 this fall. Although most famous for its use in "bullet-proof" vests, it is widely used commercially and within industry.

My first exposure to Kevlar was in the summer of 75 when one of my fellow camp counselors showed up with a Kevlar racing canoe. At less than half the weight of the camp's Grumman canoes, we were quite amazed.
