Distance Relay Fundamentals...

01/30/2013 1:38 AM

HI,

As I understand, distance relays are used on transmission lines usually. I have a hydroelectric project, which evacuates power through single circuit 500 metre 11 kV transmission lines. Does the line need distance relay and directional relay as this relatively short line??

For 500mts, conventional O/C relay IDMTL (51) should suffice. However if you have parallel radial feeders from same source, then additionally 67(directional O/C relay).

Also, using 85 pilot wire protection would be the best cost effective solution.

Alternatively since your distance is short, you can go for simple current differtial protection relay with Class X CT's on both side....

If it's you're project you really shouldn't be asking a group of guys on the internet how to do you're job. How would you're employers view it?

Also, if we have 11 kV reclosing circuit breakers, then distance relay should not be used?

Hi

You can rather use current differential relays at both ends of the short line

Hi mate

Get a Nulec Recloser and install it on your 11kV 500meter line
