The Gold Standard in the USA are the RSMeans books.

There's a multitude of text books and courses you should take in order to learn civil engineering.

If you want to thumb through a book to gauge your interest in the material, I can give a quick suggestion:

Introduction to Engineering Analysis

Start with static models and go from there (a strong grasp of physics is always helpful).

Edit: Woops, didn't know it was for "in the field". I'm at a loss.
