Didn't we have this question a few weeks back?

Frame size is the distance in mm from underside of feet (foot-mounted motor) to centreline of drive shaft.

First couple numbers in NEMA sized is distance in 1/8ths of inches, so a 40xxx frame is 5" shaft height.

Sometimes people need to look at the catalogs, hence website for manufacturers.

Hello GW

I thought motors were standardised worldwide nowadays (IEE?) and all metric but it seems I was wrong. However I checked a couple of sites for NEMA and it said shaft height is the 2 digits, but in 16ths rather than 8ths inch. This works for the 1st three listed, 42, 48 and 56 = 2.625, 3 and 3.5 inch. But then it goes pear-shaped. Frame sizes and dimensions on same site, below, as the one that gives the 16ths definition.

Any idea what I'm missing?

yup, we both missed something.

508ATZ frame is (500 series) is 50/4 = 12.5"

Your smaller frame looks like 1/16

Then I checked some AC frames for special duty and it didn't quite line up.

Bottom line, NEMA sized motors in North America are alive and well.

BUT ALWAYS CHECK THE CERTIFIED DATA SHEET!
