Titanium Dioxide Taken Internally?

02/11/2013 5:31 PM

While perusing the local drugstore today I was reading the label of the teeth whiteners and noticed that there were some that had titanium dioxide as an ingredient....If I'm not mistaken this is used as a pigment in white paint, and also some sun block....are we now painting our teeth rather than bleaching?....because I didn't get that memo....

It can also be used as a polishing compound.

In addition to being used as a polishing compound, it also finds use as a food coloring (E171).

I guess that still qualifies as a pigment, but just not what I usually think of when I hear the term.

At any rate, if your concern is related to the possibility that you might inadvertently swallow some, odds are, you probably already have.

Titanium dioxide is used as a tooth whitening agent in toothpaste and is (fairly) harmless.

It's also used in under-arm deodorant. I have ingested a fair amount of the stuff when I was young and it didn't effect me (don't ask).

You ingested a fair amount of under-arm deodorant?!?

.

Was that voluntarily, or some sort of hazing ritual you were exposed to in your youth?

.

I just read your '(don't ask)', but I am really curious, so I'm going to let the question stand. Hopefully you are willing to divulge.

For some reason I got into an Underarm deodorant fight with my brother. Did you know the roller balls pop out unexpectedly allowing the liquid to flow (pour) out if you squeeze them too hard

As to who won, that was me as the one on top most of the time. Not to worry as the contents never made it to the carpet, most (but not all) of which went into my brother's open mouth.

Don't worry- between that and the trisodium phosphate (TSP) in Shreddies you can clean and polish your teeth and then clean and paint the walls!

Believe me, people take a lot weirder things than either of those!

You put the FUN back in fungus! You must be a FUNGI to be with! Remember, if there is a fungus among'us, a fungi has a fungal sporing partner.

As long as you are not subjected to electromagnetic fields over 500 nT in the 50 - 60 Hz range you will be fine.

I have seen TiO2 in Ice cream for coloring.

There is an individual here where I work who is unable to stop licking his fingers, even with gloves on, and has ingested an unusual amount of PVC blend over a fifteen year span.

I wouldn't say he's "okay", but the problems he faces aren't due to some physical environment influence.

I ounce upon a time operated a dredge that mined TiFeO2... and sold it all to Dupont... It comes out of the ground BLACK due to that "Fe"..... I think chlorine was added and it kicked this electron to another electron and made it TiO2... and the whitest of whites...base for paint. I recall that everything used to change it was recovered and there was no waste...Guy from Dupont that told me about it said to read the ingredients label on the donuts with the confectioners sugar.... " titanium oxide "...... who woulda thunk !!! If one of you chemical guys would layout the formula for that color change thing, I would appreciate it... ( don't type too fast... I don't read too fast )..been over 35 years since I knew that, and I just don't recall....

2 FeTiO3 + 7 Cl2 + 6 C → 2 TiCl4 + 2 FeCl3 + 6 CO

TiCl4 + O2 → TiO2 + 2Cl2

Re: Titanium Dioxide Taken Internally?

Truth this is a good point ! This is in fact the way in which the industry make pure Titanium Dioxide. At our company, I did the process engineering design for a pilot plant that does the first of the above reactions. Interesting substance, [TiCl4], as it is one of the very few intermediate compounds in metallurgical processing that is a liquid at room temperature. The TiCl4, or Tickle as it's known, is highly reactive with water and is quite dangerous as such. The TiO2, Titanium Dioxide is more or less harmless as a poison. It is commonly used as a pigment in paints. It could even be that they use TiO2 in Smarties [the kiddies coated chocolate sweets]. Don't quote me on this one. But I vaguely remember reading this somewhere. I can imagine what the action of TiO2 would be in teeth whitening. I guess it is more likely that it provides a thin coating and adds white colour to the teeth. Different to removing the coloured material on teeth, the usual method. I also guess (and hope) that the pharmaceutical industry has thoroughly cleared this substance for use as a teeth whitener. Is TiO2 not also used as coating in some tablets? Someone out there enlighten us on this one.

It's the CO that will get you. That's why this guy is at home blogging instead of making more TiO2.

We use titanium for plates to hold shattered bones together, and for false tooth implants. It seems to be accepted readily. With the acid in our diets, no doubt some Ti goes to TiO2 etc, so not to worry.

See the following from yahoo health:

Gross Food #3: Salad dressing

Why it's gross: Big food corporations often add the chemical titanium dioxide-commonly found in paints and sunscreens-to processed foods like salad dressing, coffee creamers, and canned icing to make them appear whiter.
Why it's bad: Titanium dioxide is a component of the metallic element titanium, a mined substance that's sometimes contaminated with toxic lead. Plus, most white dressings (like cream-based ranch) aren't great for you anyway. Both your health and your waistline will fare better if you go with an olive oil- or vinegar-based salad topper instead. Or, better yet, make your dressing at home.

They put it in skim milk as well, so it doesn't have a blueish tint.

Would you rather use silicon dioxide? These are forms of sand used in foods and abrasives for cleaning. They usually steam clean them to sterilize in food preparation applications. You breath this in at the beach so it is considered non-toxic, generally regarded as safe, (GRAS). It all comes out in the end, literally!

TiO2 has a photocatalytic oxidation effect on organics. Swallow some together with some air and shine a low power UV lamp up your lower intestinal tract and it might just be the perfect solution to a heavy Mexican dinner.

'...a low power UV lamp up your lower intestinal tract....'

...

Somehow, that fails to strike me as a '...perfect solution...' to any conceivable problem I might be experiencing (whether or not I swallow a bunch of air and sand).

...to each their own....
