Expanding Robotics

02/22/2013 1:44 PM

It occurs to me that semi autonomous robots aren't very useful yet. In what ways can we expand the applications of semi or fully autonomous robots. What new tools and tasks can we lay on them?

First find a place where a robot would make an operation easier/ safer/ more cost-effective. Then devise the machine and/or tools to complete that task.

Crawling down pipes and making laser measurements.

Crawling down pipes is an interesting one.

Quite a few of these around, but are heavy and can require sections of pipe to be removed for access, or at least have the pipe empty.

Now if someone can design a light-weight unit which can fit through access hatches, and guarantee accurate measurements and easy recovery where the fluid is still flowing, there will be plenty of takers.

they are building plywood submarines in South America that make it all the way to the USA I bet those guys could figure how to make one that would fit in a access hatch.

I'm not saying it is not possible, but getting the power and functionality into a small machine which is also water-tight and controllable for a 2-3km (~2 mile) journey is the goal of many, but not yet achieved for use in operating pipework. (afaik)

Well it solves the problem of the Delta of the ID down the pipe. There is no real way to measure unless an inspector crawled down the ID with an ID micrometer. It also measures ,per API . the out of roundness at 5 locations and the actual ID. All wifi and no wires. Other sensors measure the bow and end squareness. All takes < 2 minutes and makes > 3 K measurements.

Since robots do not support the economy that human are forced to live in it comes to mind that robots should be offered for sale and programable so the owners can lease them out to business to fulfill their needs and the Human be able to makes the money they need to support the economy in their country. even though they say capitalism has failed it is not going away and we must face facts.

My iRobot Roomba is extremely useful (for a single guy who doesn't want to vacuum the carpets and floors).

Now, if they would just make one that cleaned itself out!
