It's not a matter of "advantages" - it's all up to how you want the circuit breaker to be able to operate. The thermal magnetic trip is built into the breaker (like the typical molded-case breaker). An electronic release can be triggered by a variety of other devices, usually by a contact closure the applies a voltage/current to the release. The trigger can be a protective relay, a manual trip or control switch, a limit switch, even a meter with a setpoint. What drives the release is up to you.
