A large coil of wire and a battery will be a good start, then Google on your title for lots more info. Welcome to CR4.

Define "large". What is "large" to you may be gigantic or puny to someone else.

Think this one is "large"?

Well by comparison to this, it is puny.

CERN large Hadron Collider outside of Geneva, Switzerland.

You'll need this to start: Then a great big plug-in.

Ok, so tell us what you are doing, in detail. We'll play along if you give some details. Little magnets? Tape/hard disk eraser?

Do you want an electromagnet, or a magnet when the "electromagnetizer" is up and running?

Electromagnets pick up and drop steel in a scrap yard. Magnets pick steel up and keep it.

Don't forget that this is also an electromagnet.

Big coil. pulsed DC with a lot of amperage.

You are not clear as to what purpose the electromagnetizer is going to be used for.

If you are going to be magnetizing objects such as tools a good place to start is:

Obtain or fabricate a ferrous metal ring of the appropriate size to allow the object(s) to pass through with minimum clearance.

Wrap the ring with several hundred turns (at least two layers) of varnished or epoxy coated copper wire say AWG size 16 with each end secured but extending out from the ring at least 3 inches to allow for connections.

Attach AWG size 10 insulated copper conductors to each connection end.

Obtain and in-line fuse holder and a 30 amp fuse then install it into one of the conductors.

Obtain a 12 volt battery and connect the supply conductors to the battery with a switch capable of interrupting 30 amps of DC current safely.

You will have to experiement with the number of wraps/turns of wire until you acheive the level of magnetic strength.

I've magnetized lots of screwdrivers by simply shorting across a car's battery or using them as a wire in a DC circuit... (accidentally, of course.) All you really do when you magnetize something is align the atoms so they are all facing the same way. Like the North pole could be at the handle end of a screwdriver, and the South pole at the other end, thus applying a uni-directional current. To demagnetize such a tool, usually all you have to do is whack it really hard with a hammer. (I suppose running a/c current through it would also re-orient the atoms to a random alignment... but that's not nearly as much fun.)

If you choose this path, remember and make certain that the thing being magnetized is big enough to handle the current that you're sending through it lest you turn it into a fuse element that decides it's overloaded and it should blow up in your face. Not a good situation.

If you want to do it the sloooow (safe) way, just put a permanent magnet in the drawer with, or on, the part you want to be magnetic and forget about it for a while... like a few weeks, months, or years depending on the properties of the material and the strength of the magnet.

Bon chance!

Years ago I worked as a copier repair tech and wee had a permanent magnet screwdriver magnetizer that was crap. If you left your screwdriver on it over night it might hold a residual charge long enough to make it through the next day before it started dropping screws in to places they never belonged.

I went about making a powered one out of a old 24 VDC 15 watt pull solenoid from a old copier paper feed mechanism. It originally had a 3/8" dia 1/5" barrel and roughly a 40 ohm resistance.

I put a old 10 amp full wave bridge rectifier and a 470 uF 200 volt electrolytic capacitor together to make a line powered ~160 DC power supply together that was triggered with a 10 amp momentary push button switch.

By pumping ~160 volts at nearly 500 watts through what was once a 24 VDC 15 watt solenoid coil made a super screwdriver magnetizer!

3 - 4 seconds in that thing and a screwdriver would hold its charge for a week or two! Most would even puck up other screwdrivers for the first few hours!

Odds are that super magnetizer is probably still in the service department today some 14 years later and long since I left.

Find a large air core transformer...

Stick the object to be magnetized in the middle of the air core

Energize the transformer

Pull the object out real fast like

Just kidding
