Unwire the Webcam

04/01/2013 8:14 PM

I have an idea that i would want to confirm with you guys before i take action. I really like RC hobbyist and i found out that POV flying is really fun! So, i thought some cheap ways that one could make a wireless short distance webcam.

Stuff:
1. a 10 bucks webcam with usb and driver
2. 433Mhz transmitter and receiver like one of these http://www.cytron.com.my/viewProduct.php?pcode=RF-TX-433&name=RF%20Transmitter%20433MHz

3. an empty usb for wiring

so, the concept is i just needed to pass the digital signals that are made the webcam to modulation then, into the transmitter, and the receiver side will receiver the digital signal and demodulate it and send it into the PC via usb. Sounds to easy? Yeah i know, thats why i want to confirm with someone with more experience and knowledge.

That's not mine, I wish we had things like that when I did RC planes. I just Googled on something like "wireless camera for RC plane", there's lots of stuff about that. Click on the link in my first post to see a complete explanation from the guy who did it.

Unfortunately the transmitter you linked to falls short on at least two counts; the effective range is only 100 meters, and the data rate is only 10kbs which is not fast enough for a real-time video feed. I suggest you read up on what the hobbyists are doing to solve those problems; cost was one of the reasons I gave up on RC planes.

I did find someone who took a USB spy-cam and used it in a plane but it wasn't real-time, he just downloaded the video off of it after the plane landed; 17USD plus a microSD card. Let us know how you solved your problem. Good luck with your project.

Something like this

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11974

reported to have a range of over 1km and for under $50! seems almost too good to be true.

Sure seems good value - I paid over £60 for just the camera around two years ago!
